3rd June 1998 (doc 284/98) Blunkett confirms (formerly announced on 23rd March 1998) on behalf of DfEE £90m budget. £60m is allocated to help small firms and individuals in specific industrial and commercial sectors to gain new and update existing skills. Funding is to equip and set up Centres of Excellence for IT and High Technology Training. The remaining £30m is for Millennium Bug Training (this was due to widespread unrest as to what would happen to IT systems at midnight on 31.12 1999 as it was believed that systems might shut down as they tried to switch to 2000 in the date string. This document announced plans to introduce new national tests for all trainee teachers in numeracy, literacy and ICT. Mention is made of increasing the number of classroom assistants and how ICT can reduce the administrative burden on classroom teachers
