Profile 2006

profile2006 As a senior researcher in Ultralab, most of my work is in exploring the application of new technologies in education at all levels.  I have enjoyed taking on consultancy roles and presenting at conferences, though this all has to be fitted in around my current project to research the delivery of a fully online work-based Honours degree with a geographically distributed team.  I love it - finding out how far you can go in having a university without a building for either staff or students, which is an amazingly long way with all the marvellous online tools available for teaching and learning.

I work with an adventurous group of undergraduates from many different backgrounds who are all undertaking research degrees, though I'm able to make good use of a great career in schools (teaching Maths, English, Philosophy and Computer Science though not usually more than two of those at a time), commerce (that's a different story) and on other huge Ultralab projects including continuing professional development for headteachers.  Having extensive experience of working with all sorts of people makes it easy to take time out from my main project to talk to colleagues in other faculties at Anglia Ruskin and other universities who are interested in my work.

The focus of my expertise at the moment is in eLearning, though that's shorthand for an enthusiasm for the development of socially constructed knowledge in online environments.  I have to emphasise "at the moment" because in a fast changing world its hard to predict where my curiosity will lead me.  That's one of the best features of working with Ultralab, its probably the first workplace where I've had so many different opportunities to put my eclectic collection of skills to good use.  I might have said that before in other jobs - but then I like to get excited by my work.

My current research interests include:
