Hal MacLean

Hal is a researcher at Ultralab where he works on a variety of projects including setting up and running online communities, facilitating learning for an online degree and developing the creative use of digital video in schools. He is also involved in assessment at Key Stage 3 using mobile phone technologies and has worked with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and the National College of School Leadership (NCSL) as part of his role at Ultralab. Prior to joining Ultralab Hal was a primary school head teacher, having been a class room teacher in a range of different schools for over ten years. This depth of experience has proved invaluable when working on the 'Online Metric' project, bringing a sound understanding of education and process to the development of the software. In addition, Hal is involved in Ultralab's digital creativity work, developing his understanding of video and, in particular, DVD authoring. He is involved in the worldwide 'SummerSchool' project which enables children to explore their creativity with digital technologies and is often found editing video or authoring a DVD or two! In his spare time, amongst other things, Hal works with youth rugby teams in the UK, running a charity website to enable the clubs to make fixtures with each other when they have no game to play.
