Schools Online Project Description

by Carole Chapman last modified Wednesday Aug 10, 2005 13:28
Schools On Line is originated and funded by the Department of Trade and Industry in the UK.

The DTI helped establish the UKNII Task Force which initiated the Schools OnLine project. Schools OnLine only exists with the support of a host of commercial sponsors and helpers largely drawn from the Federation of Electronic Industries.

Tom King holds all this together and liaises with the project teams.

Schools OnLine project is a research project coordinated by, and housed at ULTRALAB, in Anglia Polytechnic University. The server is in Chelmsford.

Curriculum support teams for Science and Modern Languages are drawn from around the UK.

The project is funded initially from September 1995 to Easter 1996 but our server will continue (come what may!) until September 1996. At the launch (Autumn 1995) there were some 60 schools connected to the project.

A key part of the project's philosophy is that everyone participating should have an active role, at the simplest level making a contribution by commenting on pages, later in the project by authoring pages themselves and taking part in collaborative activity.

For the school students involved this is a "join in and do" project rather than a "watch and enjoy" one.
