Virtual Heads
Virtual Heads Project DescriptionIn 1997 the DfES developed a programme for aspiring headteachers in the UK. As 2000 approached, the programme became dated and completion rates were low. NPQH was therefore updated in 2001, with the aim of using new technologies to enable aspiring headteachers to gain experience of the internet - given that this was becoming a prime medium for school students. To enable NPQH candidates to question experts, reflect on their own learning and share good practice, an online community structure was developed by ULTRALAB (using think.com). The online community was named Virtual Heads. The first cohort in March 2002 comprised 1,250 aspiring headteachers. The programme was so successful it was made mandatory in April 2004. Virtual Heads was facilitated by ULTRALAB's team of experienced online facilitators until December 2004, when it was handed over to the National College of School Leadership facilitation team.
