6 Leading-edge research paradigms

6.2 “Eyes on the horizon, feet on the ground”: Ultralab
Ultralab
Ultralab is the Anglia Polytechnic University’s learning technology research centre, based in Chelmsford,
Essex, UK. It has a team of about 70 people, led by Stephen Heppel. Ultralab’s research philosophy is
summarised in its motto ‘Eyes on the horizon, feet on the ground’, which stands for an inspired
pragmatism in developing, testing and propagating exemplary eLearning applications. Its Website
presently provides information on sixty completed and running projects. One of Ultralab’s biggest
successes is Notschool.net, an online school used by thousands of young people who don’t attend
schools for a variety of reasons. Ultralab has inquired into games-like learning as part of many of its
projects."
