Report OL162 Open Learning for disadvantaged groups

This spiral bound report seeks to provide information on the steps taken by Loxley College, Sheffield to provide flexible training opportunities at no cost for members of the local community disadvantaged by previous education or present circumstances. This service makes full use of Open Learning packages supported by professional tutors in a range of skill shortage areas highlighted in the 1989/ 90 Employment Department Annual Report. It identifies the aims and objectives agreed between the Sheffield Training and Enterprise Council and Sheffield Education Department (via Loxley College) for the duration of the project and refers to the activities undertaken in pursuit of these goals. A full description of work carried out, expenditure incurred and envisaged progression are included together with the analysis of the difficulties inherent in a pilot venture.

Open Learning aims to provide wider access to Education and Training opportunities through more Open, Flexible and Independent approaches for learners from all sections of the community. It offers study without the traditional barriers of pre-determined time, place, entry requirements, level or pace of study.

Sheffield Colleges have adopted a network approach to this form of flexible learning and currently offer tutorial support in a range of various subjects. A system of workshops for basic skill and communication subjects is available at each College which enables individuals to benefit from cost-effective tutorial sessions.
