Report OL176 Adult Dyslexia Screening Feasibility Study
In October 1991 the Psychology Department of the University of Sheffield was awarded a contract to investigate the feasibility of developing a test aimed at computer-based screening of adults for dyslexia, in the context of support for employment prospects and career choice. The main components of the study were: (1) a literature review identifying articles relevant to the diagnosis of dyslexia in adults; (2) interviews with theoretical psychologists experienced in dyslexia research; (3) interviews with dyslexia practitioners experienced in the diagnosis of dyslexia; (4) development of guidelines to inform the construction of an adult screening test. The report begins with an introduction to the background issues. This is followed by an overview of the findings from each of the three empirical studies, ending with a final overview and summary of the responses. Detailed information from the studies is provided in separate reports (Nicolson, Fawcett andMiles, 1992; Fawcett and Nicolson, 1992a, b).
The research, which was funded by the Employment Department, was carried out over the period January to April 1992. The project aimed to establish the feasibility of introducing a computer-based screening test for dyslexia in adults which could be administered semi-automatically under the supervision of vocational guidance professionals.
