Report OL191 Hypercourse for users of distributed computer systems groups

In 1990, the Employment Department provided funding for a two year prject conducted by the School of Computing, Information Systems and Mathematics at South Bank University. The aim of the project was to develop a training package to teach people about Distributed Computer Systems. As the project progressed this aim fostered three objectives:
(1) To develop a general-purpose Courseware Management System to manage computer-based courseware development and delivery for any subject. This system was given the name 'Hypercourseware'.
(2) To use Hypercourseware to develop flexible courseware for people requiring knowledge of Distributed Computer Systems.
(3) Within the courseware, to develop and integrate a variety of network simulation facilities which would enable users to develop their skills without needing to use real distributed systems. The reasoning behind the aim and objectives is explained below.

There is a substantial need for training in various aspects of Distributed Computer Systems. The growth of networked and distributed computer systems over the last few years has been very dramatic and surveys have suggested that as many as 80% of all corporate microcomputers are networked. The subject of Distributed Computer Systems is therefore one that is of interest to many people from widely differing backgrounds and disciplines, if for no other reason than that they are the type of computer system we are all most likely to meet.
