Report OL194 Computer conferencing for distance learning

Computer conferencing enables individuals who are geographically dispersed to communicate as a group using an electronic medium, without having to be online simultaneously. The flexibility and speed of communication it offers make it a valuable medium for teaching part-time students, much of whose study time may be spent at home.

This report describes the implementation and development of a computer conferencing project within two part-time M.Sc. courses at Birkbeck College's Department of Occupational Psychology. The 18 months initiative was funded by the Learning Methods Branch of the Employment Department.

This document is an abridged version of the full report, intended for use by those involved with launching similar initiatives or with developing conference systems. It is primarily a technical document focusing on the lessons learned and on possible areas of future development.
