Report OL200 Developing Open Learning materials for NVQs

Open Learning is becoming an increasingly used method for providing training linked to National and Scottish Vocational Qualifications. Central to any Open or Flexible Learning scheme are specially prepared materials. These guidance notes provide a 'tool' for developers of learning materials. They reflect emerging good practice in the design of Open Learning materials for VQs and provide a series of checklists to help materials developers produce effective resources. There are a number of approaches and styles of materials which have proved effective. The guidelines seek to reflect this diversity, rather than propose one specific model.

The method used to produce these guidelines was as follows. An initial draft was produced drawing on the experience of a number of organisations who had developed Open Learning materials for Vocational Qualifications. This draft was discussed and refined by a small group drawn from organisations involved in producing materials. A new version was then circulated to a wider group for comment. During this period, two workshops were held, open to all interested organisations and serving to test the guidelines. The final version of the guidelines incorporates suggestions from each of these stages.
