Report OL212 Electronic course for Technical Authorship

The overall aim of this project was to increase the flexibility and application of Sheffield Hallam University's Postgraduate provision in technical authorship, by developing an electronic course. This was to be achieved through a combination of hypertext materials (for training) and computer conference (for support). The particular objectives were: (i) to develop Certificate course materials which gave a more flexible and more motivating version of the existing course; (ii) to implement those materials in HperCard on an Apple Macintosh; (iii) to port and adapt the materials for Toolbook on an IBM compatible PC, running under Windows; (iv) to investigate the possibilities of computer conferencing for student support of hypertext training (ideally, by integrating conferencing and hypertext); and (v) to evaluate the resulting provision.

The Communication, Media and Cultural Research Centre (CIRG) runs a two year distance learning postgraduate Diploma in Technical Authorship. Through the project it was intended to deliver the first part of the diploma as hypertext, addressing a wide range of learners. These materials would be the basis of an entry level University Certificate, equivalent to a one year part-time course. Hypertext would provide the required flexibility and interaction, whilst computer conferencing could offer the necessary individual feedback and cross-course support.
