Report OL214 Open Learning: Briefing notes for ESF project managers

In the period 1991-1993 several hundred projects were funded in the UK under the European Social Fund's (ESF) EUROFORM, HORIZON and NOW programmes. Well over 100 of these projects include some element of Open and Distance Learning. The materials may range from simple off-the-shelf printed texts to very sophisticated multimedia programmes delivered in specially equipped learning centres.

The Employment Department's Learning Methods Branch established a project in the Spring of 1993 to offer advice and support on Open Learning to ESF project managers in the UK. The programme of assistance included a series of one day Open Learning Fairs and of workshops focusing on specific aspects of Open Learning such as tutorial support and programme design. It was also decided to publish a series of papers on aspects of Open Learning of interest to the ESF projects. Hence this series of briefing notes. The compilers have tried to ensure that the content of these papers is as accurate and up-to-date as possible. However, if any reader should discover an inaccuracy they would be pleased to have the details for inclusion if these notes are re-printed.
