Report OL226 Computer Assisted approach to Assessment of Prior Learning
The aim of this project was to generate a software prototype which could be used to help develop a computer-assisted solution to the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).
The benefits of this approach in the field of careers guidance had already been demonstrated by the success of the 'Guidelines' computer package developed by Sanderson CBT. However, although the processes involved in providing careers and APL advice have much in common, the data involved is very different.
The project team set out to design an evidenced-based system which would solve one of the major problems which candidates have in undertaking the APL route to NVQs, namely that of evidence collection.
This is often a difficult and time-consuming part of the APL process. Gathering specific, reliable, useful evidence in support of the candidate's claim to achieve each of the competences (expressed in the Occupational Standards as performance criteria) seemed to be ideally suited to the use of a computer system. The candidates themselves could assess what evidence they might be able to obtain and the system could provide an overall profile of the extent to which they could expect to achieve a particular element, unit or qualification.
